Overview
The TUM ENERGISE Center is inviting applications from highly qualified and motivated candidates from South Africa for a three-year doctoral scholarship in Sustainable Energy Governance.
The doctoral research will focus on governance structures and policy instruments that contribute to a just energy transition in South Africa. The selected scholar will be supervised by Prof. Dr. Miranda Schreurs from the Technical University of Munich (TUM), School of Governance.
The TUM ENERGISE Center is a partnership between the Technical University of Munich and four South African universities: the University of the Witwatersrand, University of Johannesburg, Tshwane University of Technology, and University of Venda. It promotes interdisciplinary research combining engineering, entrepreneurship, and policy to advance a just energy transition in South Africa.
Research Focus
The doctoral research will examine Sustainable Energy Governance, with particular attention to the governance structures and policy instruments supporting South Africa’s just energy transition.
The scholarship is intended for candidates with an academic background related to energy or sustainability policy and politics.
Scholarship Support
The scholarship runs from 1 October 2026 to 30 September 2029 and includes:
- A monthly stipend of EUR 1,300
- EUR 2,000 for research mobility
- Stays between South Africa and Germany
- Insurance support
Eligibility
Applicants must:
- Be South African citizens or permanent residents of South Africa.
- Hold a Master’s degree in political science, sustainability, or a related field.
- Have a focus on energy or sustainability policy and politics.
Qualified women and individuals with disabilities are particularly encouraged to apply.
Expectations of Doctoral Scholars
Selected ENERGISE doctoral scholars are expected to:
- Demonstrate strong commitment to their doctoral research.
- Participate in and contribute to TUM ENERGISE Center activities.
- Engage in academic exchange, including visits and collaboration with partner universities.
- Present their research at leading international conferences.
- Publish research in leading international academic journals.
