Overview
Climate Hub Tanzania (CHT), in partnership with Climate KIC and with funding from the Government of Ireland’s International Development Programme, has launched applications for the Generation Kijani (Gen_K) Programme.
Gen_K is a nine-month capacity-building and funding programme supporting youth-led organisations across Tanzania that are already working with young people and local communities to address climate change.
The programme aims to strengthen youth leadership, organisational capacity and community-driven climate adaptation and resilience through practical training, mentorship, peer learning and financial support.
Who Can Apply?
The programme targets youth-led, not-for-profit organisations registered in Tanzania that are actively engaged in climate action and community development.
To be eligible, organisations must meet all five criteria:
- Be legally registered as a not-for-profit organisation in Tanzania.
- Work directly with young people or climate-vulnerable communities.
- Have experience in climate education or youth engagement.
- Demonstrate experience in climate adaptation, resilience or community development.
- Show a clear commitment to including groups disproportionately affected by climate change, including women, persons with disabilities and rural communities.
Programme Focus
Generation Kijani supports community-based initiatives that strengthen climate adaptation and resilience, particularly those that engage young people in developing and implementing local solutions.
The programme encourages activities that increase youth participation in climate planning and decision-making, improve community awareness of climate risks, strengthen grassroots networks and promote locally relevant responses to climate challenges.
Funding and Programme Benefits
Five youth-led organisations will be selected, with each eligible to receive up to €5,000 to implement a community climate project between November 2026 and June 2027.
In addition to funding, participants will receive training in leadership, project management, fundraising, strategic planning and organisational development. The programme combines virtual learning, in-person sessions, mentorship, peer learning and practical assignments.
Participating organisations will also have opportunities to connect with previous programme cohorts, apply to showcase their work at the Climate Innovation Expo, and organise a Climathon in their local communities.
Expected Outcomes
The programme aims to strengthen the leadership and operational capacity of participating youth-led organisations, enabling them to design, manage and implement effective community-based climate initiatives.
By the end of the programme, selected organisations are expected to have advanced practical climate adaptation or resilience projects, strengthened their organisational and fundraising capabilities, and expanded their engagement with young people and vulnerable communities.
Gen_K also seeks to increase youth participation in local climate decision-making and encourage collaboration among grassroots climate organisations across Tanzania.
