National Hybrid Workshop on Horizon Europe – Africa Initiative IV for Kenya at the Strathmore University
About
Background
This hybrid workshop equips Kenyan researchers and innovators with practical knowledge of EU funding instruments, focusing on the Horizon Europe -Africa Initiative IV, and highlights opportunities in collaborative research, mobility, and networking. It provides hands-on guidance on using the EURAXESS platform and the EU Funding & Tenders Portal, including identifying relevant calls, finding partners, and navigating the application process. Participants also receive practical advice on building strong consortia and collaborating with partners from EU member states, associated countries, third countries, including countries in Africa. The workshop strengthens Kenya’s innovation ecosystem, improves the competitiveness of research proposals, and advances long-term goals of research excellence, science diplomacy, and sustainable development.
This workshop, part of the annual events marking the 50th anniversary of the EU–Kenya partnership, celebrates five decades of joint efforts to advance research, innovation, and sustainable development and fosters stronger collaborations and future partnerships in STI.
The workshop will open with welcoming remarks from Prof. Abdulrazak Shaukat, Principal Secretary, State Department for Science, Research and Technology, Ministry of Education; H.E. Henriette Geiger, Ambassador of the European Union to Kenya; and Prof. Vincent Ogutu, Vice Chancellor of Strathmore University. Dr. Laurent Bochereau, Minister-Counsellor for Science, Technology and Innovation at the European Union Delegation to the African Union, will then set the scene with an overview of EU–Africa and EU–Kenya cooperation in STI, with particular attention to funding opportunities under Africa Initiatives IV.
This session will unpack the strategic partnership between Europe and Africa, zooming in on EU–Kenya relations. Participants will gain a clearer understanding of the EU research funding landscape and how to position their ideas to take advantage of opportunities under Horizon Europe.
Dr. Yedilfana Setarge, Regional Representative for EURAXESS Africa, will introduce the services and support available to African researchers and institutions engaging with Horizon Europe. He will walk participants through the EURAXESS platform and the EU Funding & Tenders Portal, and lead a hands-on session.
To ground the discussion in real experience, previous awardees from EU-funded projects—including Horizon Europe, Erasmus+, and ARISE—will share lessons from their own journeys. Their reflections on grant writing, consortium building, and project management will offer practical takeaways to help participants strengthen future applications.
