Overview

Ethiopia faces interconnected challenges of malnutrition, food insecurity, micronutrient deficiencies, and climate vulnerability. This call for proposals complements the Ethiopian government’s Convergence Initiative by implementing pilot initiatives at grass-root level involving the private sector and smallholder farmers.

The global objective is to improve access to healthy diets in Ethiopia, particularly for women and nutritionally vulnerable groups. The specific objective is to mobilize investment in climate-resilient, nutrition-sensitive agri-food value chains in Ethiopia.

Financial Allocation

The overall indicative amount available under this call is EUR 4,000,000. The maximum grant per application is EUR 4,000,000, not exceeding 90% of total eligible costs. The remaining balance must be financed from sources other than the EU budget.

Priorities

Proposals must address all of the following priorities:

• Sustainable investments in climate-resilient, nutrition-sensitive agri-food value chains involving smallholder farmers and leading to added value in the country, with clear pathways to healthy diets
• Awareness raising and behaviour change communication clearly linked to availability, affordability and accessibility of healthy diets; standalone nutrition education not embedded in investment-led interventions is not eligible
• Priority given to value chains contributing to availability and affordability of minimally processed foods, particularly horticulture and animal-sourced value chains for domestic consumption
• A strong gender component with gender-sensitive and gender-transformative objectives addressing structural barriers to women’s economic participation

Eligible Applicants

The lead applicant must be a non-profit legal entity effectively established in an EU Member State, in Ethiopia, or in other eligible countries as stipulated in NDICI-GE. International organisations are exempt from the establishment requirement. Co-applicants and affiliated entities must meet the same eligibility criteria. The lead applicant may not submit more than one application under this call.

Action Duration and Location

Actions must take place in Ethiopia. The duration of an action may not be lower than 48 months nor exceed 60 months.

This is a restricted call for proposals conducted in two phases. In the first instance, only concept notes must be submitted.
