The South Africa–Sweden University Forum (SASUF) launches its Long-Term Mobility Grants 2026, supporting PhD students and early career researchers to undertake 5-month research exchanges between Sweden and South Africa.
Overview
This mobility scheme aims to strengthen academic collaboration between SASUF partner universities by enabling early career researchers and doctoral candidates to immerse themselves in new research environments.
The programme supports:
- PhD students and early career researchers based at Swedish universities undertaking mobility in South Africa
- PhD students and early career researchers based at South African universities undertaking mobility in Sweden
Participants will integrate into host research groups while continuing their own research projects, fostering long-term scientific collaboration and international networking.
What the Programme Offers
The SASUF mobility grants are designed to:
- Strengthen international research collaboration and partnerships
- Expand academic networks across Sweden and South Africa
- Enhance research capacity and interdisciplinary exchange
- Stimulate new research ideas and innovation
Eligibility
Applicants must:
- Be enrolled as a PhD student or have obtained a doctoral degree in 2022 or later
- Be affiliated with a SASUF partner university throughout the mobility period
- Commit to a continuous 5-month mobility period (shorter stays are not eligible)
Funding
The grant covers mobility-related costs, including travel, accommodation, and subsistence.
For mobility to Sweden (South African applicants):
- Monthly allowance: 30,000 SEK (up to 5 months)
- Travel support: up to 15,000 SEK
For mobility to South Africa (Swedish applicants):
- Monthly allowance: SEK 2,932
- Housing support: up to 10,000 SEK/month
- Travel support: up to 15,000 SEK
Note: Salaries are not covered; applicants must retain funding from their home institutions.
Application Requirements
Applications must include:
- Invitation letter from host supervisor/research group
- Completed application form
- Confirmation letter from home supervisor/mentor/PI/line manager
- CV and publication list (max. 4 pages)
- Motivation letter (max. 1.5 pages)
Applicants are expected to proactively identify and contact host institutions and research groups prior to submission.
Selection Criteria
Applications will be evaluated based on:
- Academic merit and institutional endorsement
- Motivation and commitment
- Potential to advance research skills and generate new ideas
- Balance across institutions and gender representation
- Alignment with current or past SASUF collaborations (preferred)
Key Dates
- Call opens: 2 October 2026
- Deadline: 4 November 2026
- Results announced: by 31 December 2026
- Mobility period: must be completed by 31 December 2027
