Descrição

Overview

The Multidisciplinary Mobility for a Climate Resilient Africa (MMoCRA) programme has launched its first cohort scholarship call under the EU-funded Intra-Africa Academic Mobility Scheme.

MMoCRA supports academic mobility, research collaboration, professional training, and knowledge exchange in areas related to climate resilience, energy, agrifood systems, digital technologies, water management, and critical raw materials.

The programme will provide 95 mobility scholarships, including:

  • 44 Master’s scholarships
  • 12 doctoral scholarships
  • 20 traineeships
  • 19 staff mobility opportunities

The first cohort includes 38 available mobility opportunities across Master’s, doctoral, traineeship, and staff categories.

Programme Objectives

MMoCRA aims to strengthen Africa’s capacity to design, implement, and scale climate-resilient solutions through multidisciplinary education, research, and skills development.

The programme contributes to Agenda 2063, the UN 2030 Agenda, and UNESCO’s Education for Sustainable Development initiative by building the capacity of students, researchers, trainees, and university staff.

Its thematic focus includes climate and energy, agrifood systems, water and sanitation, artificial intelligence, digital technologies, and critical raw materials.

Partner Institutions

The participating African universities are:

  • Busitema University, Uganda
  • Kyambogo University, Uganda
  • Strathmore University, Kenya
  • Namibia University of Science and Technology, Namibia
  • University of Cape Town, South Africa

The European technical partner is the University of Twente, the Netherlands.

Only the five African partner universities may host student mobility. Trainees may be hosted by eligible public or private organisations in Uganda, Kenya, Namibia, or South Africa.

Who Can Apply?

Student applicants must be nationals of and residents in an African country at the time of application.

Two target groups are eligible:

Target Group 1: Students currently registered at, admitted to, or holding a degree from one of the five African MMoCRA partner universities.

Target Group 2: Students registered at, admitted to, or holding a degree from another recognised African higher education institution.

Applicants from all African regions may be eligible, including East and Central Africa, Southern Africa and the Indian Ocean, West Africa, and North Africa.

Women, persons with disabilities, refugees, applicants from disadvantaged backgrounds, and candidates from fragile or least developed countries or regions are strongly encouraged to apply.

General Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must not have previously received a scholarship under projects selected through the Intra-Africa Academic Mobility Scheme 2022–2027.

They must also commit not to receive another EU-funded scholarship for the same mobility activity during the MMoCRA funding period.

The host country must be different from the applicant’s country of nationality and residence.

Trainees must be enrolled in a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD programme at one of the African MMoCRA partner institutions. Staff applicants must be employed by one of the MMoCRA partner universities, including the University of Twente.

Mobility Opportunities

MMoCRA supports three main categories of mobility.

Student mobility is available for Master’s and doctoral candidates through degree-seeking or credit-seeking arrangements.

Credit-seeking Master’s mobility may last between 4 and 23 months, while doctoral mobility may last between 6 and 35 months. Participants remain enrolled at their home institutions and return to complete their degrees after the mobility period.

Degree-seeking mobility supports full Master’s programmes of up to 24 months and doctoral programmes of up to 36 months at participating host institutions.

Traineeships last three months and provide workplace experience in public or private organisations operating in MMoCRA priority areas.

Staff mobility lasts between two weeks and one month and is open to academic, administrative, and technical staff for activities such as teaching, research, curriculum development, benchmarking, training, and institutional knowledge exchange.

Scholarship Support

The scholarship covers a single return journey, installation costs, subsistence, insurance, and eligible participation costs.

Monthly allowances are:

  • Master’s students: EUR 890 per month
  • Doctoral candidates and trainees: EUR 1,230 per month
  • Staff members: EUR 2,370 per month

Host institutions will also cover eligible tuition fees, research costs, and insurance through the institutional contribution budget.

Scholarships are available for selected programmes including:

  • Irrigation and Drainage Engineering
  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Material Engineering
  • Climate Change and Disaster Management
  • Global Change and Sustainable Agriculture
  • Natural Resource Management
  • Water and Sanitation Engineering
  • Water Quality Engineering
  • Civil Engineering
  • Sustainable Energy Transitions
  • Information Technology
  • Computing and Information Systems
  • Computer Science, including AI, mobile computing, and networking

The available programme, host institution, scholarship type, and mobility duration vary by opportunity. Applicants should consult the official scholarship guidelines for the complete first-cohort allocation.

Application Requirements

Applications must be completed in English through the official MMoCRA online portal.

Required documents include:

  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Passport or national identity document
  • Academic transcripts
  • Two recommendation letters
  • Motivation letter
  • Research proposal, study plan, work plan, or traineeship plan, depending on the mobility category
  • Evidence of admission, registration, or enrolment, where applicable
  • Host supervisor or departmental support letter for applicable Target Group 2 applicants

Applicants may select only one host institution and should carefully confirm the academic, language, and admission requirements of their chosen programme.

Once an application is submitted, no further changes can be made.

Selection Process

Applications will first undergo administrative and eligibility screening to confirm completeness, nationality, previous scholarship status, and compliance with the programme requirements.

Eligible applications will then be assessed through two stages:

  • Document evaluation: 70% of the final score
  • Online interview: 30% of the final score

Assessment criteria vary by mobility category but may include academic performance, publications, relevance to MMoCRA objectives, quality of the research or mobility plan, motivation, references, language proficiency, institutional impact, and cross-cutting considerations related to gender and inclusion.

Appeals

Unsuccessful applicants may submit an appeal within seven calendar days of receiving the selection decision.

Appeals may relate to administrative omissions, procedural irregularities, technical system errors, or ethical concerns. Appeals cannot be used to challenge academic judgement, submit new documentation, or contest the lack of available scholarship places.
