Overview

Nexa is a climate and health initiative co-led by Grand Challenges Canada and the Science for Africa Foundation, in collaboration with a global consortium of partners and funders.

The initiative supports innovative solutions across Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean that enable local health actors to use climate-related health risk information to improve service delivery and reduce the health impacts of climate change.

The current call is open only for Transition to Scale innovations, following the closure of the Proof-of-Concept funding stream.

Objectives

Nexa aims to support proven innovations that help health systems anticipate and respond to climate-related health risks, particularly by:

• Strengthening climate-informed decision-making for health services.
• Improving responses to mosquito-borne diseases, extreme heat, and poor air quality.
• Scaling innovations that enhance climate resilience within health systems.

Funding Priorities

Applications must address at least one of the following areas:

• Climate-informed early warning and monitoring systems, including innovations that help anticipate and respond to:
  • Extreme heat.
  • Poor air quality.
  • Climate-driven changes in mosquito ecology affecting diseases such as malaria and dengue.
• Climate-responsive patient care delivery, including innovations that strengthen local health responses to:
  • Mosquito-borne diseases.
  • Heat-related health impacts.
  • Air pollution-related health conditions.

Funding

• Funding type: Transition to Scale
• Grant amount: Approximately US$250,000 to US$2,000,000 per project, depending on the maturity of the innovation.

The programme is no longer accepting applications for Proof-of-Concept innovations.

Eligibility

Applicants must:

• Be legally incorporated (or equivalent) in any country.
• Implement the proposed innovation in eligible countries within Africa, Latin America, or the Caribbean.
• Propose a Transition to Scale innovation that has already been tested, demonstrated effectiveness, and is ready for wider implementation.
