Her power, her ideas: Mary Njeri
As part of our Her Power, Her Ideas series, the Africa-Europe Innovation Platform highlights the leadership and contributions of women who are shaping innovation ecosystems across Africa, Europe and beyond. More women are stepping into leadership roles in innovation, yet they often remain underrepresented in public narratives.

This week we spotlight Mary Njeri, entrepreneur, business growth consultant and ecosystem builder based in Berlin, working between Germany and several African countries. She serves as Co-Lead of AiDiA Africa, where she helps strengthen structured cooperation between African and European innovation ecosystems.
Her work focuses on diaspora engagement, investment readiness and cross-border entrepreneurship. Through strategic platforms and high-level roundtables, she connects founders, investors and policy actors.
What has being a woman in innovation meant for your journey?
Being a woman in innovation has meant navigating spaces where I was not always expected, and sometimes not immediately taken seriously. It required confidence, resilience and the ability to stand firm in my expertise, especially in male-dominated environments. There were moments when I had to prove my competence more than once and learn to speak with clarity even when challenged.
At the same time, being a woman has been a powerful advantage. I lead with emotional intelligence, systems thinking and a long-term perspective. I focus on building ecosystems, fostering collaboration and creating inclusive spaces where others can grow. These qualities are not weaknesses. They are strategic strengths.
These challenges shaped my leadership style and deepened my purpose. They pushed me to create platforms for women, amplify underrepresented voices and build structures that open doors for the next generation. My journey taught me that innovation becomes stronger when women lead with authenticity and vision.
What message would you like to pass on to the next generation of women leaders?
Lead as yourself. Do not shrink to fit expectations and do not believe you must become harder or louder to succeed. Your perspective is not secondary. It is essential.
Invest in your competence. Build real expertise in finance, strategy and decision-making. Confidence grows from capability, not from external validation. At the same time, protect your integrity. Success without values will not sustain you in the long term.
Build alliances instead of competing in isolation. Support other women and create spaces where collaboration is strength, not weakness. Leadership is not about proving your worth. It is about creating impact and opening doors for others.
Think long term. Be patient with your growth and disciplined in your vision. There will be setbacks, but they do not define you. Your ideas matter. Your voice carries weight. Step forward with clarity and courage. The future of innovation needs women who lead with competence and conviction.
